Shop Information

The shop is a general second-hand and antiquarian bookshop with two large rooms holding about 40,000 volumes. We buy and sell books on all subjects, but one of the rooms is largely dedicated to natural history, particularly ornithology. Our policy is to provide interesting books in good condition at very competitive prices - there is a bargain for everyone!

In addition to our general stock - everything from Astronomy to Zoology - we have 1000 quality books on ornithology and much on natural history. As well as out-of-print and scarce items we stock some quality new books, such as those from Academic Press, Poyser and Pica. We also stock out-of-print and new volumes in the New Naturalist Series.

The Local Area..

Castleton

Our bookshop, which was established in 1995, and our bed and breakfast accommodation are located in the centre of the historic Peak District village of Castleton, situated about 17 miles west of Sheffield on the A625. Castleton sits at the western end of the Hope Valley and is over-looked by Mam Tor, the ‘Shimmering Mountain', and guarded by the steeply majestic Winnats Pass - an old drove road which is still the only way out of the valley at its western end.
Castleton is home to Peveril Castle, situated above one of the four show caves in the immediate vicinity. See our [links page] for some web sites relating to the area.

Hope Valley & The Peak District

The area is one of outstanding natural beauty, Hope Valley striding the divide between Derbyshire's gently undulating limestone country to the south, and the brooding moors and hills of the millstone grit landscape of the Dark Peak to the north.
The area is ideal for walking, camping or simply having a day out with the family. Castleton is steeped in history and has many other attractions: gift shops; Peveril Castle which dates back to Norman times and was used by Sir Walter Scott in ‘Peveril of the Peak'; four caves, one of which may be explored by boat, and others which yield quantities of Blue John stone. The splendid Chatsworth House, the seat of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, is about 10 miles away and the attractive market town of Bakewell is seven miles to the south.
More photos of the area [here]. Castleton is equidistant from Sheffield and Manchester and hence convenient for cultural and sporting activities, and shopping.
